STEP 1: Education

For patients who are not familiar with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacment Therapy the first step should include learning more about bio-identical hormones and the approach in beginning replacement.

HRT SEMINAR:

Our Pharmacy provides patients with an interactive and educational approach to a Bio-identical hormone replacement. We strongly believe that by empowering the patient with information about hormones, menopause, and therapeutic options, the patients will be more prepared to react to symptoms appropriately and make positive therapeutic decisions in the future.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Seminars will include a review of hormones and their functions, provide an understanding of pre-, peri-, and post-menopause, and discuss environmental factors which affect hormone levels. In addition, it will help patients to better understand the "new" approach to hormone replacement therapy, bio-identical hormone therapy, and the role of saliva testing in more appropriately initiating therapy. Patients will have opportunity to ask questions and direct the discussion.

STEP 2: Saliva Testing

As described in a number of publications on hormone replacement therapy, saliva testing is a science that has been in use for over 30 years in research, now available on an individual patient level, allowing for the evaluation of hormone levels in the tissue, where hormone action takes place.

While symptom evaluation is an important part of evaluating hormone replacement symptoms, one symptom may not determine which hormones are out of balance. Groups of symptoms may lead your health care professional in the proper direction, but with a number of potential hormone imbalance possibilities, and an overlap in symptoms with other medical conditions, symptoms evaluation is not enough!

Saliva testing allows for the evaluation of hormone levels in the tissue, where hormone action takes place. Whether steroids are free in the blood or released from the binding proteins, hormones leave the blood and diffuse freely into the tissue – which includes the saliva tissue, glands, and saliva. Hormone levels can then be determined in the saliva and represent the unbound, biologically active hormones in the body. Saliva testing appears to be more reliable and more specific in determining hormone imbalances.

Salivary hormone testing has proven to us to be one of the most powerful tools in guiding patient decisions and physician and pharmacist recommendations in hormone therapy. While symptom evaluation plays a critical role in therapy recommendations, symptoms evaluation alone can be misleading. Salivary hormone testing detects deficiencies and imbalances to better guide hormone therapy and dosing, resulting in successful outcomes for the patient.

Salivary hormone testing does not require a prescription and test kits can be obtained at our Pharmacy. We recommend female patients test estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol and for male patients test for estradiol, testosterone, and cortisol.

STEP 3: Consultation

Our goal is to help you put the puzzle pieces together...

You will receive your results from ZRT Laboratories 10-14 days following testing. Pine Grove Pharmacy will also receive a copy of your results. Pine Grove Pharmacy will mail you a letter with a Medical History Form, letting you know we have received your results and that Pine Grove Pharmacy does offer Individual Consults.

Please call to schedule your hormone consult. A consultation will include a discussion of diet and lifestyle, medical history, medications, symptoms and hormone levels.

At your request, Pine Grove Pharmacy can prepare a letter of recommendation for you or your physician and fax it directly to your physician office. Once your physician reviews and approves the recommendation, you will be ready to being therapy.

The cost of a consultation is $65 which includes a 30-45 minutes consultation, written letter of recommendation, and a 30 day, 60 day, 90 day, 6 month, and one year follow-up.

STEP 4: Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

At this time, commercially available bio-identical hormone replacement products are limited. As a result, a compounded prescription must be prescribed by your doctor and prepared by your compounding pharmacist. Bio-identical hormones can be prepared in a variety of dosage forms including creams, gels, capsules, suppositories, etc.

Pine Grove Pharmacy has the knowledge and experience to work with you and you physician regarding dose and dosage form selection of compounded prescriptions.

STEP 5: Follow-up & Evaluation

Following the initiation of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, Pine Grove Pharmacy will continue to work with you and your physician regarding hormone replacement therapy monitoring by evaluating your symptoms and addressing any questions or concerns you may experience. Pine Grove Pharmacy works one-on-one with patients to provide the best care to encourage successful outcomes.

Pine Grove Pharmacy has prepared follow-up evaluations to help evaluate your response to the therapy. Evaluations are scheduled at 30 days, 60 day, 90 days, 6 months, and 12 months following the initiation of therapy. Patients are requested to fill out and return these forms as scheduled so that additional recommendations can be made to improve outcomes.

Following your first year of therapy, patients are encouraged to retest their hormone levels through saliva hormone testing.
